Technical Details
A .keynote file is a ZIP archive with IWA (Protocol Buffer) files for slide content, animations, builds, and themes. Embedded media (images, video, audio) are stored within the archive.
History
Steve Jobs first demonstrated Keynote at Macworld 2003, using it for his own presentations. It has been part of the free iWork suite since 2013 and was redesigned with IWA internals alongside Pages and Numbers.
