XLS (Tableur binaire Microsoft Excel)
XLS est le format de tableur binaire hérité de Microsoft Excel utilisé de 1997 à 2007. Il stocke les données de feuille de calcul, les formules et le formatage dans un format binaire propriétaire avec des limitations significatives par rapport au XLSX moderne.

XLS utilise les enregistrements BIFF8 dans un conteneur OLE2 Compound Document. Limité à 65 536 lignes × 256 colonnes par feuille. Les macros sont stockées dans des flux VBA. La taille maximale du fichier est d'environ 35 Mo (pratique). L'encodage des chaînes varie selon la locale.

Le format binaire XLS a été utilisé de Excel 97 à Excel 2003. Basé sur le stockage composé OLE2 avec le format BIFF8 (Binary Interchange File Format). Remplacé par XLSX dans Office 2007.
